Welcome to Ms. Powers's Core class!
Hello, I am excited to be your child's 4th grade core teacher. We have a lot to learn this year, but with a little hard work I know we will all have a successful school year.
READING
Unit 4 will focus on summarizing and personal narratives. The students will continue with reading roations. The rotations currently include four centers: work on writing, read independently, read to someone, and word work. They work at a roation when they are not with me in small groups.
*Work on Writing- During work on writing students write a weekly friendly letter to me about the book that they are reading. We are practicing letter writing format and letter writing skills. I write the students back each week with feedback on their letters.
* Word Work- Word work is a time for students to practice a variety of skills including reading, vocabulary, and grammar. We are currently practicing idioms during our word work center.
*Read Independently- At this time students will read good fit books while using their journal to make connections ad they read.
* Small Groups- When they are not at one of these rotations they will be working with me on a focused reading lesson.
*Friendly Letters- Fourth graders will write me a weekly friendly letter about the book they are reading, and a focused concept of reading. I will reply to them weekly, and all communication will be kept on a google document accessed thorough their Google account.
*Reading Plus- This will students second year using the reading program Reading Plus. Students will have access to their reading Plus accounts at home as well. Spending time on Reading Plus at home or at the library is acceptable use of time for reading logs.

In writing we are working on opinion essays. Students have created thesis staetements, and they are currently workin on finding reasons and evidence that supports their opinions.
