Ms. Nielsen's Literacy
Welcome to our literacy class page! Literacy happens every day and is embedded with students working toward their reading and writing goals. We are now transitioning from "learning to read" to "reading to learn" and will study many different reading strategies throughout the year. The literacy block includes Reader's Workshop and Writer's Workshop where students participate in a mini lesson of skills first, and then spend most of the time practicing and making progress toward their goals. This page will keep parents and visitors updated in what is happening in our literacy class.
The First Thirty Days
In the first weeks of school, students are learning in workings of Reader's Workshop so they know exactly what to expect for the rest of the year. During these first thirty days, we will focus on aspects of fiction and non fiction so we are prepared to learn different strategies around them in the future.
Activity Time
Writing
The first writing unit we focus on in fourth grade is narrative writing. Students are challenged to write a realistic fiction story that includes strong character development and a easy to follow plot with a problem and a solution. We are starting this unit by exploring different topics students could write about. Students are encouraged to pick something they are familiar with and maybe base their story off of a personal experience.
